Agents

Independent agents. One job each. A CPA over all of them.

Every agent is defined by what it may see and what it may never do. None computes a figure; none makes a filing decision.

  • One job each
  • Isolated examiner
  • Schema-validated output
  • Every treatment cited
The loop

Prepare, examine, resolve, learn.

The preparer and the examiner run on Claude Opus 5.5, with deliberately separate inputs. The resolver drafts options on the least expensive model the finding allows; the CPA chooses. The harvester turns recurring findings into code, offline and in batch.

In the engineOpus 5.5

Classification agent

Reads every bank and card transaction with its documents and assigns a ledger category with a confidence and a rationale. Below the confidence threshold it asks a question instead of guessing.

Sees
Transactions, attached documents, the chart of accounts, the client’s own history.
Never
Totals anything. Suspense items stay in suspense until a human answers.
In the engineOpus 5.5

Preparer agent

Decides tax treatment — what is capitalized, what is limited, which elections are open — and records a position for every judgment call, with authority and confidence. The tax engine computes the consequence.

Sees
Trial balance, chart of accounts with tax-line mapping, prior-year return, entity facts, open findings.
Never
Writes a figure. Every number on the return comes from deterministic code.
In the engineOpus 5.5

Examiner agent

Adversarial by design. Reviews the finished return in the manner of a tax examination — looking for unsupported deductions, missing forms, misclassified income and positions that will not hold — and raises structured findings.

Sees
The completed return, the trial balance, the prior-year return, entity facts.
Never
Sees the preparer’s reasoning, positions or confidence. It is given the return and the books, nothing else.

Resolver agent

Takes one finding and drafts two to four ways to resolve it — on Sonnet for a finding with one clear answer, on Opus for elections, positions and book-to-tax differences — each with the supporting authority, the effect on the return and the risk. The CPA chooses; the choice is recorded with their name.

Sees
One finding, the return, the affected accounts and authorities.
Never
Chooses. A resolution is valid only with a named human actor.
RoadmapOpus 5.5

Rule harvester

Runs offline over resolved findings and proposes deterministic checks that would have caught them without a model — with a test built from the original case and a citation. A human reviews every check before it merges.

Sees
Resolved findings, anonymised, and the checks already in the library.
Never
Merges its own code. Nothing it writes reaches the tax engine unreviewed.

Agents propose. A US CPA signs every return: your CPA, or ours.

The choice on every finding is recorded with a named person. No agent chooses a resolution, writes a figure or signs.

Beyond the return

What else the same substrate does.

The ledger, the authority register, provenance and the examination loop are general. These agents reuse them for the rest of a firm’s year: intake, client questions, fixed assets, planning, notices, nexus, prior years, valuation and workpapers.

In the engineSonnet 5.5

Books auditor

Rebuilds the year from bank evidence and compares it line by line with the prior bookkeeper’s ledger: duplicates, transfers booked as income, loans booked as sales, owner contributions, principal booked as interest.

Sees
Bank statements, the bookkeeper’s ledger, documents.
Never
Overwrites the client’s books. It produces a reviewable adjustment set.
In developmentSonnet 5.5 → Opus 5.5

Document intake agent

Reads receipts, bills, 1099s, K-1s, loan agreements and IRS notices photographed on a phone or forwarded by email, extracts the fields, and matches each to the transaction it supports.

Sees
The uploaded image or PDF, open transactions.
Never
Accepts an extracted amount that disagrees with the bank without flagging it.
In developmentSonnet 5.5

Client question agent

Turns open items into plain-language questions for the business owner — “what was the $8,000 wire to K. Patel?” — by text or email, and files the answer and any receipt back into the record.

Sees
Open questions, the client’s contact preferences.
Never
Answers on the client’s behalf.
In developmentSonnet 5.5 → Opus 5.5

Fixed asset agent

Spots capital purchases in the ledger, proposes asset class, recovery period, convention and elections (de minimis, §179, bonus, ADS), and keeps book and tax registers side by side. The depreciation itself is code.

Sees
Purchases over the de minimis threshold, invoices, the existing register.
Never
Computes depreciation. It proposes class and method; tables in code do the arithmetic.
RoadmapOpus 5.5

Planning simulator

Runs what-ifs through the real tax engine — §179 versus bonus, accelerating a purchase, an accounting-method change, a reasonable-compensation range — and drafts the client memo. Every scenario is a reproducible engine run, not a model estimate.

Sees
The current-year ledger, the projected return, the CPA’s scenario inputs.
Never
Presents a figure the engine did not compute.
RoadmapSonnet 5.5 → Opus 5.5

Notice response agent

Reads an IRS or state notice, matches it to the return and its provenance, identifies what the agency is asking, and drafts a response with the supporting workpapers attached for the CPA to send.

Sees
The notice, the filed return, its provenance and workpapers.
Never
Contacts an agency. The CPA sends.
RoadmapDeterministic code → Sonnet 5.5

Nexus and compliance monitor

Watches revenue by customer state, payroll by employee state and foreign ownership through the year, and raises a filing obligation when a threshold is crossed — state income, sales tax, Form 5472, 1099s, Delaware franchise tax.

Sees
The ledger, the cap table, entity facts.
Never
Files silently. Each obligation surfaces with the threshold and the actual figure.
RoadmapOpus 5.5

Prior-year opportunity scanner

Reads three prior years of returns against current law and the ledger to find missed deductions, elections still open and amendment candidates, with the statute-of-limitations date for each.

Sees
Prior returns, the ledger, the authority register.
Never
Recommends an amendment without the computed effect and the deadline.
RoadmapOpus 5.5

Valuation analyst

Prepares valuation workpapers from the ledger — income, market and asset approaches, purchase-price allocation for an acquisition, gross assets for Delaware franchise tax and QSBS tests — for a credentialed professional to review.

Sees
Statements, projections supplied by the CPA, comparable data.
Never
Issues a qualified appraisal or a 409A opinion on its own.
RoadmapSonnet 5.5

Workpaper and binder agent

Assembles the review binder at convergence: lead schedules, tie-outs, every finding and how it was resolved, positions with authority, and the provenance of each line — ready for partner review or peer review.

Sees
The converged return and its review cycle.
Never
Edits a figure. The binder is a projection of the record.
Guardrails

What every agent has in common.

  • Output must match a declared schema; an unparseable answer is retried once, then goes to a person — never to a guess.
  • Every tax treatment must cite an authority in our verified register, valid for the tax year.
  • Low confidence produces a question, not an answer.
  • Documents and transaction text are fenced as data; instructions inside them are ignored.
  • The model that answered, the prompt and the input are recorded. A response from any other model than the one requested is rejected.
  • Each task runs on the least expensive model tier that performs it reliably, and escalates to a stronger tier — and then to a person — when confidence is low.
  • Client return information is used only to prepare that client’s return, and is not used to train models.
