Two sets of rules

How the books treat it, and how the return treats it.

Books Book accounting · US GAAP

  • Inventory costing

Inventory includes materials, labor and an allocation of production overhead; standard-cost variances are allocated between inventory and cost of sales.

    ASC 330-10-30

Tax Tax accounting · Internal Revenue Code

  • Uniform capitalization

Producers above the gross-receipts threshold capitalize direct and allocable indirect costs, including some costs expensed for books.

    IRC §263A

  • Qualified production property

Nonresidential real property used in qualified production activities may be fully expensed when construction begins after 19 January 2025 and before 2029, subject to placed-in-service and use requirements.

    IRC §168(n) (P.L. 119-21 §70307)

  • Research credit

Product and process development, including prototypes, may qualify for the research credit.

    IRC §41

The differences between the two are Schedule M-1 adjustments.

And they are where examinations tend to look first.

What the agents load for this industry

Each industry has a knowledge pack that sits in the stable, cached part of every prompt, so most of its cost is incurred once per return rather than on every round. Knowledge packs are in development.

  • Standard costing and variance allocation
  • §263A simplified methods
  • Construction-start documentation for production property

  • How is overhead allocated to inventory?
  • When did construction begin?
  • Which projects support the credit?
